“Participate with Data” was a data-driven participatory planning initiative led by Future Cities Laboratory Global (FCL) in collaboration with Participate in Design (P!D), held during Singapore Design Week 2024.

overview

The aim of ‘Participate with Data’ is manifold: To move from data to action; To empower practitioners with a framework for effective communication; To encourage participatory design. We recognised that there is a proliferation of digital information and shift towards evidence-based designs, and acknowledge the strength of data to enhance the planning process and making solutions more context appropriate.

The event was held during the Singapore Design Week (SDW) on 26 September and 2 October at National Design Centre and CREATE Tower (National University of Singapore), respectively. Practitioners, students and academics of diverse backgrounds participated to discuss, share and celebrate methods of participatory planning informed by data. During the event, participants were taught data-informed participatory planning approaches as well as ur-scape, FCL’s open-source planning support tool, applied to a Singapore context. Following, they had a sharing and networking dinner to foster meaningful connections.

The workshop has nudged participants to recognise the importance of participatory planning and the diverse data types involved. This event would not have been possible without the incredible support from FCL, P!D, Singapore-ETH Centre (SEC), DesignSingapore Council (Dsg) and most importantly our participants.
